Review: 'NY I Heart' Yoda Minifigure
As a Star Wars and Super Heroes minifigure collector among many other things, the seemingly constant release of exclusive figures can become frustrating at times. However, I was lucky enough to source one of the exclusive 'NY I Heart' Yoda minifigures. One thousand of these were distributed in conjunction with the unveiling of the largest LEGO model ever created in Times Square, the X-wing Starfighter, with a purchase of 9493 at the nearby LEGO store.
Immediately this minifigure struck me as a 'must have' more than many other exclusives do. Beyond being rare, and therefore highly desirable, I also find his shirt rather witty. As this is a limited edition minifigure, of course not everybody is going to be able to obtain one, nevertheless, to Star Wars minifigure collectors (or collectors of hard to find minifigures) this is inevitably going to harbour a great deal of interest.
With the purchase of 9493, as well as the Yoda minifigure, was a cardboard sleeve to go around the box. This is a lovely memento of the occasion, with lots of details surrounding the construction of the five million piece life-size X-wing model, and some fascinating statistics on one side.
On the other is an advertisement for the Yoda Chronicles which has recently aired on Cartoon Network and will be continued a little later in the year.
The head for the minifigure is the same as is included with Yoda in 75002. It is rubberized and cast with plenty of detail. The printing and moulding are both very accurate to the animation model in the Clone Wars television show, complete with bulbous eyes, enormous ears and white hair. Naturally, the torso for this minifigure is the main attraction as it is the only exclusive component. It is predominantly white, and is printed with the classic I Heart NY design, albeit with a clever twist to reflect Yoda's speech patterns, as the verb goes to the end of the sentence. A photo of the front can be seen at the top of the review. The back of the torso is not printed and his legs are the standard short tan legs, again without printing.
As an exclusive minifigure, this is not an easy collectable to get hold of, and is certainly one for collectors only due to the fairly hefty price online. However, if you are lucky enough to find this Yoda for a good price, do not hesitate as it really is an excellent minifigure in my opinion and I find the adapted T-shirt charming.
Of course, one should be careful though as this would be a very simple minifigure to customise. Thus, without the cardboard sleeve the figure becomes far less desirable and beware of customs masquerading as the real thing.
