    8683: LEGO Minifigures Series 1
    More details...

I went hunting for the collectible Minifigures yesterday and came up empty-handed. I got the same response at two of the places that I went: Someone came in here and bought the only box we had, sorry. I have been hearing rumors for a while that these were discontinued, but I haven't heard anything official (sorry if I am behind on the times). So I called the LEGO company today to see if the rumors were true. Unfortunatly, the woman on the customer service line confirmed it, she said there are no more of them anywhere at the LEGO Company. They are either in the wild or in the hands of collectors or scalpers. Not much we can do about this if we didn't get any. If you see any of these at the store, grab them. They are an extinct species. At least we have Series 2.

*phweph* Wow, luckily I have all of them already! Since they're extinct, I better go hunting for them and then selling them on eBay. ;)

There is no emoticon for what I am feeling.

Posted by Ypres in Canada, Jul 14 2010 3:30PM:

I think my dad is more upset I didn't find them than I am.

They were no good to me anyway. Pretty much an item you can't mix with your Lego... due to lower-grade plastic. An item you can only leave on its stand and wait to sell it. I'm not really going to buy Lego for the purpose of selling it later... well I did buy three Hoth Bases at TRU in Halifax over half a year after they'd been long sold out.

Well It's good to see the minifigs gone! Series 2 looked much better anyway!

Posted by Super Robot Wars in Ireland, Jul 14 2010 3:31PM:

Where I live, I saw 6 boxes of them in my local smyths a few weeks ago. They didn't seem to be selling very fast so I have plenty of time to collect them. I'll probably check if there still in stock : ).

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, Jul 14 2010 3:33PM:

The price scanners at Target (U.S.A.) recognize the minifigure barcodes so I am going to keep holding out hope. I'm kicking myself, though, because the Spaceman is starting to become more appealing to me now that I have a Space Shuttle.

Ah well, Series 2 will be out in a week or two by the look of it, so even if you do find some it's probly best to save :)

Ahhhhhhhhh.........I'm So Lucky to Have 1 of Each. :)
Don't Really Know If I'll Be Getting Series 2. I'm Hoping to Spend all My Money on Harry Potter. :( Still, I May Get Them if They're Sitting in Front of Me. :)

Posted by BrickBob09 in United Kingdom, Jul 14 2010 4:04PM:

I only have 12 (9 different). Now I'm going to have to buy them at really expensive prices off eBay. I'll have to buy series 2 quicker- and I also hope that LEGO will make more of the next series.

Too bad, i wanted the skater. :-(

I have them all yet had to pay over the odds and resort to Ebay to get the clown :(

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, Jul 14 2010 4:16PM:

As far as i can tell, you can still get them in the UK (while stocks last), although i don't know what the mix of figs is like, as i shop at a 'blind-purchase' store, so there might be a lot of barcode-read 'dummy' returns or something by now.

Posted by mrdennings in United States, Jul 14 2010 4:18PM:

I see magnets in our future! ok so lego may acutally choose to not make any more money off of series 1 by reprinting them, something that happens ALL THE TIME in the CCG word, (what are we up to in magic? 10th eddition?) however I TOTALLY see lego releasing these guys as several sets of the kitchen magnet figs that lego has been doing for some time now.

Posted by Super Robot Wars in Ireland, Jul 14 2010 4:23PM:

Just checked Argos for the collectable minifigures and there cheaper than smyths, which is annoying >: (! I'll be getting them there for now on, hopefully they might let me check the barcodes. Do they let you check the barcodes in Argos? If someone could answer it would be really appreciated.

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, Jul 14 2010 4:30PM:

@Super Robot Wars: Depends on the store staff, some have allowed it, some have not. It can't hurt to ask whether you can select your own.

@DrathMaul1997 - Series 2 in a week or 2? I thought S2 was going to be a Sept. release? I suppose that's for the States and EU will get them in August...

Posted by johntcondon in United States, Jul 14 2010 4:42PM:

Last week I checked three different TRUs in Indiana and couldn't find any. Today I found a full box at Fred Meyer (in Oregon), and completed my collection, so there are still some out there. Fred Meyer also doesn't include the TRU markup, and they had a 10% off coupon!

Posted by Super Robot Wars in Ireland, Jul 14 2010 4:51PM:

Thanks LegoMatt! I'll be sure to check out Argos and see if they'll let me compare barcodes with the sheet.

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, Jul 14 2010 4:55PM:

@Super Robot Wars: Also, check your money-back guarantee. If you find you can't pick your own, you might be able to return the ones you don't want using your receipt-guarantee. Effectively picking what you wanted after all, just a bit more work.

Posted by Alemas in United Kingdom, Jul 14 2010 5:02PM:

Oh no! I'm still missing 3 of them! Disaster! ;(

Posted by krysto2002 in United States, Jul 14 2010 5:31PM:

I don't have a single one, every time I go to a store that sells them they were sold out, even when they were new! These guys flew off the shelf so quick that it's literally impossible to find them at all.
So no collectable figures for me, oh well.

Posted by KJM72 in United States, Jul 14 2010 5:57PM:

I still have yet to find the Spaceman I've been wanting. Was able to get the robot, luckily.

Posted by brickmatt in United States, Jul 14 2010 6:09PM:

I still haven't been able to get the last one I need for Series 1! I've been able to look through just one shipment at my Toys R Us, and haven't been able to find them anywhere else. I may have to resort to eBay if TRU, Target, and/or Borders don't get them.

Posted by Pobwall in United Kingdom, Jul 14 2010 6:28PM:

WH Smith seem to be where it's at, everyone I go in always has at least one full box on the counter.

They are the only Lego worth buying there incidentally, as they upped all their standard set prices by 50% then put them in a "buy one, get one half price" offer, which if you do the maths works out at a mark up of 12.5% when you buy 2 sets at the same price. Of course, if you buy two at different prices, the value gets even worse....WHAT A STITCH UP!!

Posted by 1265 in United States, Jul 14 2010 6:37PM:

I went the expensive route and purchased a box off eBay three weeks ago. I got tired searching the stores for them. In the end.....it's saves me time and gas.

Posted by Jimihendrix in United States, Jul 14 2010 6:41PM:

The good news is on amazon.com this seller called classic book is selling them for a penny! even with shipping it is a good deal! I am buying 15!

Posted by Ypres in Canada, Jul 14 2010 6:48PM:

@1265 Yeah but it doesn't save you money on Shipping! I sure hope you didn't just take a buy-it-now... because those (from what I saw) were extortionate. Auctions went pretty high, but at least you would've paid what others thought they were worth.

But anybody seriously planning to buy missing figs, don't do buy-it-now... I'm mad enough that people encourage the whole act of 'buying everything just to sell'. The reason you couldn't find any was because people bought them up to re-sell, don't just give those re-sellers your money.

I'm much better off saving my money for real sets... at least those are cool to show off!

Posted by 1265 in United States, Jul 14 2010 6:59PM:

@Ypres - I didn't do the buy-it-now. I got, what I felt was a fair deal, on the price of the box. You gonna start seeing the price increase now. I hope to have better luck with Series 2.

the still have a few in nz in shops like toy world and kmart

Posted by brickzone in Ireland, Jul 14 2010 7:22PM:

They seem to be very widely available in Ireland still. Argos have them at multiple tills now, in branches I've been in both north and south. Currently the best bargain now that they are €1.99 rather than €2.79 (presume the UK price is reduced now too?). Smyths Toys in Cork had a box at customer service, boxes at the tills and boxes with the other Lego! Still boxes in other Smyths too and you can check stock online at www.toys.ie. €2.49 there.

Art & Hobby branches may have them too, but they seem to be selling faster there (nevertheless I've seen a replacement box being put out). €2.75 there.

Also spotted a box at the customer service desk in Toys R Us in Newtownabbey (Belfast) in Northern Ireland, presumably worth checking other TRU branches in the UK.

With this just flat out sucks, I haven't gotten a single minifigure yet! I only wanted the Spaceman, Robot and Cowboy, but every time I showed up at a Toys R Us, Walmart, Five Below, Lego Store, etc. with my wallet and bar code detector in hand, they always gave me this response..."Sorry, those things are really popular. You can try and call in sometime and we will check for you." Man this sucks

Posted by Super Robot Wars in Ireland, Jul 14 2010 8:19PM:

@brickzone, thanks for the info. Argos seems the cheapest way to get them so I'll probably complete my collection and maybe get a few more zombies, robots and spacemen ; ). Also it's strange how Ireland has tons of collectable minifigures, must not be that popular over here.

Posted by Nequmodiva in Germany, Jul 14 2010 8:44PM:

Again, there are plenty of them in Germany, at least in Berlin. The Toys R Us I attended had about 300.

Posted by gabeq714 in United States, Jul 14 2010 8:50PM:

Are there any in the Southern California area? I've been searching but no luck. I'm not planning on reselling or anything, just wanna pick up a few for the collection.

Posted by Legoliner Pilot in United States, Jul 14 2010 8:52PM:

Using my iPhone 3GS to scan the barcodes, I managed to get one complete set (phew!) and some extras of the figures I really wanted; specifically five zombies, another robot, and two spacemen.

I guess I got lucky, but I feel no sympathy towards the people who randomly came to their local Toys 'R Us expecting a full case to be there. No. These are really popular minifgs, and if you want to find them, do your homework! That means calling up the store and asking when their shipment is coming, and then on the day of the shipments arrival you should call the store to make sure that they are there so you don't waste gas on empty-handed trips. And no, it is not impossible to get them all, but rather requires a bit of determination and hard work.

I have one extra Cowboy, Shamrock. I'll trade you for another Lego minifigure with an accessory of some kind if you have any I could use. Contact me via my profile.

Legoliner Pilot, where did you get the 3GS app which recognises the barcodes ?

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, Jul 14 2010 9:49PM:

I got 10 (8 different) when the LEGO store open at Rockefeller and my local LEGO store said last weekend, that they weren't sure when they'd get another shipment. I guess these are the last ones in my area anyways? Hopefully it's not set in stone yet on Series I being discontinued.

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, Jul 14 2010 9:58PM:

The guy who's selling on Amazon for a penny a figure is charging $5.00us shipping for each figure. So it's $5.01 per figure for anyone who's interested.

Posted by darthgiggitygoo in Australia, Jul 14 2010 10:13PM:

I've been waiting for so long here in australia and now theyre discontinued! I just think that lego had to be a bit more organised.

Posted by Legoliner Pilot in United States, Jul 14 2010 10:30PM:

@DoctorDaveWatford the app is on the top 25 paid apps in the Apple app store. The app's name is RedLaser. I think it costs 99 cents.

Posted by Legoliner Pilot in United States, Jul 14 2010 10:39PM:

I would be very weary of someone offering the figs for the minimum price. If he did offer at that price, then he would lose a lot of money. It is most likely a scam. I'm surprised some of you fell for it!

Posted by Paco the Duck Ninja in United States, Jul 14 2010 11:40PM:

I'm very annoyed by this. I've never even seen evidence that in Target, Wal*Mart, or even Chicago Lego Stores have ever STOCKED the figs. And if they did stock them, I doubt they'd go directly into fans. Scalpers would only buy as many as possible for resale on Bricklink, eBay, etc. I only was able to get ahold of four at Brickworld, and I payed $5 each for them from a scalper, only because I was so desperate to get them. I wish that TLC could just have made many more of the First Series, or at least just have took a longer time span to release the figs.

Posted by theseasentinel in Australia, Jul 15 2010 4:18AM:

The latest Australian Lego catalogue, as included in the most recent Lego Club magazine has a full page advertisement (pg 59) indicating that the series 1 and 2 minifigs will be "NEW" in September and only available at selected retailers. I imagine this would be K-mart, Big W, Toy World and Target, possibly Toys 'R' Us.
As yet I have not found them on our shelves but will keep an eye out.

Posted by Routemaster in Germany, Jul 15 2010 4:34AM:

Many stores in my area got a second wave of Series 1 Minifigs in the last two weeks.

Posted by brickzone in Ireland, Jul 15 2010 5:38AM:

@Super Robot Wars - I was told in Argos that they are selling well, although actually of all the places selling them, I think they probably sell least there (as it is not an "order from catalog" kind of thing, and some people might be reluctant given Argos's store setup to add ones to their order just at the cash desk). I think that retailers here also planned for high demand and that each outlet services a lower population than e.g. the UK, so it was easier to get plenty from Lego. Also we don't really have a lot of crazy Lego resellers or AFOL horders here in Ireland, plus the former wouldn't be able to do business here as overheads would be too high (even just postage).

Like I said, I have seen boxes disappear completely from Art and Hobby. With Smyths it is always hard to tell how Lego items sell as they restock frequently.

Posted by mrdennings in United States, Jul 15 2010 10:55AM:

Ok I too am holding out hope for a second or Third wave of Lego Minifigs to hit US stores sometime soon however I'm wondering if a letter writing campaign detailing our dismay and frustration over the supplies (or lack thereof) of this first series and their subsequent disinterest in addressing these issues might just make Lego rethink the notion of not reproducing this first series again.

Posted by ILikePi in United States, Jul 15 2010 11:50AM:

No minifigs at all here in Silicon Valley. As soon as they came available at a store, they sold out in less than a few hours. I checked Borders, Toys 'R' Us, and the LEGO Store multiple times and asked the employees, but each time they either said that they had no idea what the minifigs were, or that they had none in stock. I'll have to buy 2 complete sets of Series 2 with the hope that I can trade one set for a set of series 1 later on, since Series 2's availability is the same as Series 1.

Posted by scottwb2010 in United Kingdom, Jul 15 2010 12:51PM:

I had no problem in my local Argos regards checking barcodes. The packs were on display at the tills and the girl couldn't care less if I checked them so didn't have to take pot luck with what comes from the back of store. Then the guy behind till saw me checking and didn't realise the barcode system worked as he had checked the price barcode and resorted to feeling the pack as he only needed one to complete his set. He was more than delighted when I picked out the wrestler for him and completed his set as I got the robot my son was needing to complete his set.

Posted by Da_LegoBuilder in United States, Jul 15 2010 3:18PM:

btw, does anyone know if they were selling them in Legoland CA? Or might be selling series 2 at legoland CA?

Posted by legomatt in United Kingdom, Jul 15 2010 3:47PM:

@mrdennings: I for one do not want them reproduced. It was a collectable series where the whole point is to collect while you can and trade for what you missed. Sadly the first series was oversubscribed and lego got caught short with the high demand which is unfortunate for us all, but a collectable series' should never be re-produced as it ruins the format and defeats the point - plus Lego haven't even brought back regular non-collectable sought after sets, which personally i would rather see them do before spoiling the fun of re-issuing collectables.

However, i would not object to some 're-workings' of the popular figs of the series (to be worth collecting for everyone), such as releasing a purple or green zombie with different expression and different clothing, or a cheerleader in red with a different team letter, a wrestler with different style uniform etc. This would compliment the first series without treading on its toes too much - and would maintain the value of that first series to the series collector, as the original version would be identifiably different.

Posted by mrdennings in United States, Jul 16 2010 9:58AM:

@legomatt I have to respectfully disagree with you with regards to Lego not re-releasing popular Lego sets, they do it all the time! Take a look at the current run of star wars Lego sets and count how many of these sets are reissues then remember a few months back when the Pirates line was all the rage most of those sets were carbon copies of their original release way back when. I remember a few years back Lego even had a Lego store exclusive which was one of the original castle sets re-released with the original box art and all. Now we can nitpick all we want and say oh the AT-AT's come with different figs and the new one is smaller than the original, or they only redid the mtt because the original one was really poor, but the nuts and the bolts of it is there have been THREE different x-wings released over the years (one still available now) and all of em have come with Luke Skywalker and a ship that made an X when the wings were extended, why? Because X-wings sell and Lego is in the business to make money if they think that there is a possibility to make money off of something they will do it. right now the secondary market is having a field day with these things and I really think that the intended market is not getting access to these figs because speculators are buying these things up ever chance they get with the hopes to make a quick buck, again I'm really hoping for a second wave of these figs to hit the US to help dilute the market but until that hits let me ask you this have you seen many events where Kids (and adults) were trading their Lego minifigs in order to get a complete set?

Posted by mission_zed in United Kingdom, Jul 16 2010 12:03PM:

@mrdennings - I think legomatt was not saying Lego will not re-issue them, but they SHOULD not re-issue them. The Collectable minifigs are a little different from regular Lego sets, in that they imply they are a one off. Once they are gone, they are gone. I agree scalpers are annoying, but his suggestion of releasing very-similar-but-not-exactly-the-same designs is a very good compromise. I think Lego's aim was to have kids swap their duplicates in the playground, not organise conventions and meetings, like some trading cards games have. Maybe someone should set up a Facebook group, where users can post their wants and duplicates.

After 10 minutes reading barcodes by eye at WH Smiths I finally completed a mint, sealed collection of Series 1 Minifigs to go with the opened ones in the card display box ;)

If anyone in or around Weymouth is interested, the Toymaster has about 4 sealed boxes, and 2 opened ones that are still pretty full.

Posted by Tom_2772 in United States, Jul 16 2010 3:38PM:

@Voypro, You're not really the type of person I was talking about. I mean the people who sell these things for about 10 bucks for a single figure

Posted by avacadoturban in United Kingdom, Jul 16 2010 3:58PM:

Forgot to say, according to my local LEGO supplier the secondary barcodes have been giving shops problems because their staff scan these rather than the actual barcode. Might be another reason to axe the secondary barcodes that let you identify the minifigure.

2 nearly full boxes of them in Argos Enfield Town and they are on the counter (so was able to go thru them and select the ones I needed to complete!)

John Lewis appear to have them in stock online http://bit.ly/bxhtAM - You may have more success in the actual stores. You can pick just the ones you need using the barcode guide.

All I can say its like anything a consumer produces, the first run is always lower in quantaties, due to the fact they are not really sure how a product will be received by us the public. Now Lego have got a feeling or number run on minifigures sold I am sure series 2 will be produced in larger quantaties. So yes, series one will be the ones to get. If they get to series 5 you will be able to get them anywhere you go. But regardless of what series or how many produced, I am a collector of all lego and will buy them!
