    Beginning Sunday 9/26/10 and ending Saturday 10/2/10, Toys R Us is having a "20% Off" Sale on the following three Star Wars sets:  Hoth Wampa Cave (8089), Grievous Starfighter (8095) and Plo Koon's Starfighter (8093).  Please note though that this "20% Off" is applied on the new TRU price and not the MSRP.  Thus your savings are moreso in the 10%, 12% and 4% range respectively.  Toys R Us is also offering a $10 Gift Card with any $50 Star Wars purchase (outside of books and educational electronics) or a $5 Gift Card with any $30 Star Wars purchase under the same restrictions.  The Gift Card deal is only available in-store but the discounts will also be available online.

    While the Gift Card aspect makes this a much a more enticing offer, you can still probably find as good a deal if not better at Borders with one of their weekly coupons.  With just their standard 33% coupon, you can get Slave 1(8097) at 22% off MSRP, Hoth Wampa Cave (8089) at 25% off MSRP, and the Emperor Palpatine's Shuttle (8096) at 17% off MSRP.

@yellowcastle, doesn't seem worth while going to TRU for any Lego set now, their prices are way to high!

@wildcherryp3psi - We definitely need to continue to support our Toy Stores, both independent and large retail. We just have to be smart consumers. These B2G1F and B1G1HO deals are great, even when applied after a TRU markup. It is always better for the consumer to have multiple retailers competing for our business in the market.

i had noticed that TRU had listed all the star wars sets at MSRP when they first came out. then in the last few weeks, they had raised the prices... this made me suspect that a sale was coming.

i'm with yellow castle on supporting the local brick and mortar places. isn't it fun to go in and physically pick up the sets? turn 'em around and look at the art / alt. pictures? i try to support TRU when they have decent sales. the current one is certainly the best they'll have all year - and the prices are better than i'd get at the lego store! shhh... don't tell them i'm buying elsewhere. :) and don't forget... TRU rewards members, you get a little bit of that $ back. i love getting the $5 coupons in the mail. i used one this week. i got the small car $5, pig farmer $4.50, jester, $4.50... with the buy 2 get 1 + my $5 coupon, i paid $4.50 + tax for all three sets. that's $1.50 each! i'm trying to scrape together the $ to get the new transportation set + airport + castle.... i'd get the transportation set for free, (well... for $10 since each of the other two are $5 over MSRP.) that's a pretty darn good deal.

I read an article last year about TRU under investigation for price fixing. The issue is due mostly to baby items and with Babies R Us. The trend, however, indicates that TRU forces sellers to give them certain discounts which are subject to expiration or volume and they punish their manufacturers if they give similar discounts to Walmarts, Targets and Costcos (you'll see that Lego appeases TRU with more exclusive "limited edition" Lego sets, Target and Walmart is catching on to this as well). Looking at early Lego prices, the trend to me suggests that TRU prices at MSRP (manufacturer suggested retail price) are actually discounted so selling at MSRP with manufacturer discount gives them a nice profit. When that manufacturer discount expires, TRU jacks the MSRP up again to compensate. I don't have proof but if there is no volume discount and they are just jacking prices up for the sake of margin, it seems like a devious tactic. I hope consumers are smart enough to let retailers shelf space ache with time until the build more fair pricing confidence into their inventory. I support TRU when they match Lego prices but I will not if they are gouging.

BTW does TRU price match? Take an ad or Lego.com screen shot to TRU and ask if they price match. See if they let you use the coupons with the price match.

TRU does not price match anyone even their own website. I have asked in the past. I think if people are upset about TRU price gouging then just like when gas was $3.80+ a gallon at one station and $3.50 at another, don't buy at the higher place. If you do then these places will get the idea that you accept their outrageous price hikes.

My brother has actually used his I phone to get a price match at TRU and they gave it to him so I am guessing it is store by store (i didn't work for me and I used the website ad as you have suggested) It is worth a try. Call customer service to complain if they won't honor the match. This helps (I did this with an online order and they gave me a credit plus free shipping!).

EDIT: I am also a TRU loyalty card memeber, that may help too!

TRU IN CANADA PRICE MATCH'S SETS BUT THEY HAVE TO BE IN AN ADD, BUT THEY HAVE ALL OF THEIR SETS AT MSRP.

@ starfire2: The problem with not shopping for LEGO at TRU is that no stores (beside actual LEGO Stores) have a better selection than TRU in some areas.

Unfortunately, I don't have a LEGO Store near me.

And on an off-topic part: Target raised their CM prices to $3.00, so there's no way to get around the CM price hike besides a LEGO brand store, coupons, etc.

That might be true for you but for me between Walmart and Target they have pretty much the same selection as TRU. Also there are times when Lego.com has free shipping offers. I'm not saying "don't shop at TRU." I am saying if people don't like TRU's prices then they should buy elsewhere. TRU continues to price gouge because they know there are some consumers willing to pay the price.

I would say that nearly 75% of my Lego purchases last year were from Toys R us and most of those occurred during one of their many sales. I love my Lego stores but their sales are few and far between. I recently reviewed my still-boxed sets and was amazed at how I was able to remember when and where I got each of them and at what discount! :o) I'll do my best to keep everyone apprised on all the forthcoming Black Friday and Christmas deals as there were some great deals last year. Last year, AOL teamed up with Target one day culminating in 50% off sets (Thanks FBTB!) and Amazon had a ton of great "Lightning Deals" each day. Despite all of the sales, I somehow never found an opportunity to pick up the great MTT. :o(

Thanks for posting the info about these sales. Personally, I haven't purchased anything with them yet, for the reasons you described - the actual savings is much less than it appears. This is also why Amazon is such a strong competitor, because you don't have to pay tax. That alone, in my state, is a 6% savings.

I have bought sets at TRU in the past, but my local store on top of the crazy prices, don't have very friendly or helpful staff. I do like the idea of sales but when I worked out the price of the Hoth Wampa Cave it came up as $38.01 after the price hike, the 20% off and Mesa AZ tax. Somehow I don't think only having around $2.00 of the MSRP is worth my while...

I keep an eye on Amazon to watch for anything Lego going on sale, They still get Venerators up for discounted prices and Free Shipping.
Don't get me wrong, like Yellowcastle I have a ton of boxed sets purchased through TRU but only City and Castle (maybe technic) sets now. The SW sets are too expensive, but I guess that is what coupons are for. I still see TRU eventually selling Lego SW at B1G1HO but it will be ad house since they have not done it for a while.
As for the B2G1F it seems like it was apretty big success as a lot of their inventory has been cleaned out, BUT I would say what was nice is the infusion of the Lego TRU truck sets on the site (not sure if they got them at the stores) and being B2G1F as well,and the potter pre-order (granted the prices are hiked)

The coupons you get if you are a rewards member (sign up in store or online). You have to spend a certain amount in the time period to get the coupon. It will either be emailed or snail mailed to you. As for grievous it is 44.99 with the discount.

As far as I can tell, TRU is no longer stocking the TRU truck in stores. Thus, this is probably the best chance to pick one up.

just picked up the wampa cave...had a $5 certificate from a previous purchase so after the discount and the certificate it came to 31 dollars before tax...not bad

I received the official hardcopy TRU ad today in my local newspaper, and upon seeing the prices of these sets after the 20% was already taken off, I felt disgusted. $1 off the true price of Plo Koon's Starfighter, for example. Also, I'm glad I bought the various battle packs when I did since I see their prices are now up to $14.99. I'm almost speechless at how ridiculous this is.

How much is the biggest Kingdoms castle? Because (not that I want it) I saw they (Toys 'R' Us) had it for $104.99 USD. That seems too odd to be one of Lego's original prices.

Also, when I was there Saturday (9-25-10) I got the LAST City Advent Calendar for $35.99 USD. That seems about 5-$10 USD overpriced. hmm......

@Sandraider: I think the Castle was 104.99 for their 'sale' (which was still a decent deal because of the 33% off for B2GOF)So they may have dropped the price on it for now.
The Calendar is 35 through Lego too (which is a rip off no matter what) they had those as B2GOF as well I think)
The City Advent calendar is not a good price at all, I mean only 6-7 figs I think and a bunch of 'toys' for the lego kids in the set and two santas for $35 is a joke..
The Advent Kingdom one is a better deal, same price, but you seem to get a lot more for your money... until next year when lego probably bumps the price up due to the demand for them....
Heck, I would not be surprised in the least if Lego decides to up the Series 3 Minifigs to 2.99 per pack themselves.

^ for some reason i always thought of it as being $25. It has like 160 pieces. Well, 2008's Castle one did...
I get the 'calendars mainly for the pieces. I am technically out of the age limit. (I am 14)
Anyways, 20% isn't really a sale. It is closer to what they SHOULD price them at.
