I'm a very new member (BooTheMightyHamster), and I've only been here a couple of weeks. I was drawn in by the main site, which is excellent - as a reference is it superb, and I find the set info, and particularly the reviews, to be extremely useful as I start to put a collection together after 30 Lego-free years.
Shortly after joining the site, I signed up to the forum, and while it was interesting for the first few days, and people were friendly and welcoming, now I've got to know the place a little better, I'm beginning to be put off.
Although it's decribed as a 'discussion forum', it would appear that 'opinion' threads are actively discouraged, and indeed locked. A recent example can be seen here.http://www.bricksetforum.com/discussion/8948/r2-d2-ucs-star-wars-set#latest
I find this very strange - discussion and opinion is the lifeblood of every other forum that I belong to (non-Lego forums). It would appear that the Brickset forum concentrates on collecting, reselling and generally turning a profit from the hobby. If that is it's primary function, then it would be useful if that was made clear to new members right at the beginning. I've just been back and read the forum guidelines post, and there's nothing there to say that certain issues are 'discouraged'.
Indeed, the reviews in the main database are entirely 'opinion', and I find it the single most useful aspect of the site.
I suspect that in future, while I will enjoy using the main site, I may well stop participating in the forum, as I'm not interested in reselling.
Anyway - sorry for moaning. If the established users like it the way it is, then that's the way it should stay, and I'll go and find a different Lego forum that's more in tune with my interests.
All the best with the site for the future though!
