6242-1: Soldiers' Fort

Escape the fort and steal the gold!

They say no pirate has ever escaped from the soldiers' fortress prison, but if he can get the key away from the monkey guard, this one plans to try! Is the pirate captain coming to lend a hand, or is he just after the treasure chest? If the soldiers catch him, he won't get away with either! Crank the winch to hook the treasure chest, fire the pull-action cannon, or play inside the stockade! Includes 2 pirates, 4 soldiers, row boat, fish, monkey and crocodile! Fortress measures 12" (30 cm) long and 7" (17cm) high!

Imerial Guards Port!

Posted by Armada in N/A on 09 November 2009

This set was really neat, it comes with a lot and has some cool functions.

Pros:
1) Comes with 6 minifigures, a crocidile, and a monkey.
2) Cannon that really fires!
3) A crane that rotates that can pick up and set domn a tresure chest.
4) Can pull 4 seperate sections apart making your own unique fort!
Cons:
1) Only one cannon (I wish there were more).
2) No other special functions to the set besides the back of prison opens.
3) A bit small (could be bigger for your money).

Over-all rating: four stars
This set was nice and all getting the soldiers, but mainly I think they should make it bigger for $50.00.

Are new pirates good or bad?

Posted by salahadin in Czech Republic on 20 October 2009

So, I must begin my review with claim - new pirates are worse then old.

I don´t like new color of bricks...where is old yellow?
Flag 8 x 5 Plastic Ragged with Crown and Crossed Cannons Pattern - why is it plastic?

Sticker Sheet System Soldiers Fort - why!? I like this motive painted.

The new fortress is average, times of Eldorado fortress is already gone. No 3D baseplate, no defensive walls, no loopholes. just 1 cannon.
I miss more details.

One way or another, prison is well built and a small bridge is cool.

Verdict: I miss old times of pirates sets. New lego is more succinct.

Soldiers' Fort

One of the best recent Pirate sets

Posted by brixton in Canada on 16 October 2009

The soldiers fort looks absolutely amazing. I am not a big fan of stickers but the stickers in this set add great detail to the fort. The set wouldn't be as great without the stickers in my opinion. Having a wanted poster of brickbeard is a nice touch. I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of the crane is but it doesn't detract from the set in any way. I also love the fact that the cannons fire the cannons placed inside. Sometimes it takes a few tries.

You get four soldiers in this set. One has a torch, one has a feater in his hat and the outpost commander doesn't seem to be well armed. The interior of the tower is bare and could use some furniture. I don't think much would fit in there though. The monkey holding the key is a nice element of this set. You also get two pirates and a boat filled with dynamite.

There are some issues with this set. I cannot put the crocodile together. The connection piece that makes up his mouth appears to be too small to connect with the body. This appears to be a very poorly designed figure on legos part. I thought maybe this was a defect with this particular set but after purchasing a another lego set with a crocodile I had the same problem. I have come to hate lego crocodiles. I love the palm tree and the giant flag but I continue to wonder what is the point of hiding the jewels under the palm tree? The bridge is a nice feature of this set but is a bit small. I am also wondering what is the point of the fish in the barrel?

The best of the "new" Pirates sets, without a doubt!

Posted by JonB_1982 in Germany on 16 October 2009

I recently got this set from amazon.de, for the great price of 28.99 € (regularly, in Germany this set is 49.99 €, which is definitely overpriced). I have to admit that I'm a fan of the old Pirates sets from the early 1990s, which are unsurpassed in my opinion. Most of the new pirates sets (especially the dismal Kraken Attacking) are okay, but cannot compete with the old ones. This one, however, is a worthy successor to the old sets.

It is beautifully constructed, with lots of little details and a really nice color scheme - not as nice as the old white-yellow design, but close ;) You get six minifigures with this set, which is good for its size - but (now comes the criticism) I really would have liked another Imperial guard - there are only two contained in the set. Two pirates is okay (though one would have sufficed), but two "normal" footsoldiers is a bit stinted, I think. The admiral/governor figure is nice, though. The pirate captain's boat is a bit minimalistic (no seats), but the dynamite that comes with it is a great addition to the pirates sets that opens new possibilities for combat situations (yeah, I love staging battles, I have to admit).

The buildings are great, overall. The cell is beautifully designed, just like the small bridge. The tower with the crane is also okay (even though the crane takes up a lot of space on the top level, which makes room for guards quite scarce up there). The part between the small bridge and the tower is really beautiful and has a lot of space, but (I guess there are always some "buts") the structure on it is a bit flimsy. Still, the "wanted" sticker looks great and adds nice detail to the overall set. While I liked the old plastic flags better than the new ones, this is still okay.

The only thing that I find really disturbing about this set is the inflexible plam tree. Why couldn't they just take one of the good ol' palms? And, as some have pointed out already, the title of the set is a bit misleading - this is definitely not a "fort". It is beautiful and has great playability, but if anything, it's a dock or a small port - if you really want a soldier's fortress, there is no way past the Eldorado Fortress (6276), which you can get at ebay or bricklink and which is the best Imperial set ever made, period.

Overall, however, I have to rate this set here 5/5, as the flaws are little compared to the tons of pros - and, this is the best 2009 pirates set, hands down.

Soldiers' Fort

Very handy, enjoyable set, but not great value.

Posted by Matt the Cat in Australia on 06 August 2009

Most of my colleagues have described this set with flourishing detail, so I don't need to repeat what has already been said.

What you see is pretty much what you get...four individual, very different modules that, through traditional grey pegs, constitute a soldiers' fort. Mmm, well, perhaps an outpost, as everyone else has astutely pointed out.

Once built, you have in your hot little hands a gaol, a palm tree and bridge, a general purpose annex and a HQ/watchtower. Not to mention, of course, two pirates, three soldiers, the outpost legate, the evil monkey, an articulated crocodile, row boat, cannon and crane. In addition, there are a decent variety of weapons.

I am very impressed with the modular design as you can mix and match whenever the mood suits you, and, by itself, the outpost is wonderful to gaze upon and model.

However, for AU$79.99 this is NOT good value. I picked it up on sale for AU$64, and, though somewhat better, it is still not ideal. For AU$50-55, yes.

Despite the issues with value for the Soldiers' Fort, it is a must have for the Imperial collection as the standout set. With any other Pirate set, no matter how small, the Soldiers' Fort will compliment it perfectly.
