Absolutely Amazing

Posted by STnL on 11 August 2008

My initial foray back into Lego was motivated by this guy. For some time, I had been building with my younger sister some City and Creator sets which although I liked I did not feel as compelled to start collecting again. It was just a nice activity I could do with her rather than watch a DVD or play kiddy games. But when one of my fellow Transformer collectors posted an image of this guy, it blew me away. The visual appeal of it was amazing. I just had to track it down. On top of that, he told me it was on clearance in his area and I quickly searched the TRUs in my locality but none were available. With his help and an interstate parcel later, I had this guy and I was amazed.

In the meantime before getting Golden Guardian, I'd grabbed 8101-8105. They were all very good but when I got this big guy, I fell in love. Within the hour of obtaining it, I put everything else aside and built it. It's unbelievably good.

The balance and solidness of the final mech is truly amazing. The unique cockpit design compared to the others in the 8100 line that I have is very appreciated. The array of weapons and shields creates a lot of dynamic poses. Combine this with excellent articulation it is very playable. There is only one point of articulation that really is missing and that's the waist. But that can be remedied with a bit of work. The large golden cannon you'd think would cause the toy to over balance. Nope. It doesn't. It stays upright with very few balance issues. The shoulder pads don't get in the way arm articulation either and can move around just enough to give you some play value in terms of how you want to pose this wonderful mech.

I do agree with a reviewer above that the bland gold chosen should've been improved but that's where the weapons step in. They work amazing well and it's one of the cases where I have applied stickers onto my Exo-Force unit rather than holding off to use it to make my own custom mechs.

The visual aesthetic is awesome too. At first glance you have to question if it even is Lego. The only part that gives it away at first sight are the two little white wings above the shoulder pads. They telegraph it away and I feel that a few flat white pieces could've avoided that as well as enhanced the look.

But that really is a smaller issue. The mech itself is very imposing. Wide legs and very nice energy-tubes on them make it a very solid and imposing mech. Unlike some of the other sets like Blazing Falcon from 8108, his angular bits don't easily fall off.

Best Mecha Design from Exo

Posted by uberpuma1 on 26 June 2008

I couldnt believe how flexible this set was. With the right pose, he really comes to life! I had just built the aero blaster, and was kindof disappointed with the mech.. but I am now thinking of combining the boosters from that with the golden guardian to make the ultimate flying-fighter!

Took about 20 minutes to build... it was really simple.. but very unique when put together.

The only real downsides I noticed were

A.. no hands...
B.. Gold isnt "gold" Couldnt they have sprung for an actual "Gold" metallic similar to some of the star wars collectors models? I mean, it was only three pieces. and STICKERS are horrible!
C.. My last grip which almost wasnt a gripe was the back side, they almost hid the lack of design back there with the shoulders. BUT.. a few slope pieces will fix that, or perhaps the booster pack from aerobooster

All in all, the Best Exo for play, the second best to look at (the first being the awesome bridge walker!)

Big, bold, and beautiful.

2007’s Exo-force lineup was unfortunately mostly lackluster. Many of the kits that year showed extreme laziness in design – however, there were exceptions. One of them was the Golden Guardian, a ToysRUs exclusive that was most likely the finest kit that year.

Piloted by a Hayato figure with a shiny gold-armored suit, the Golden Guardian is still one of the largest two legged Exo-force mechs today, and the entire design is extremely impressive. Taking cues from Gundam and other anime shows, the Golden Guardian features a massive shield and a giant cannon arm with multiple weapons. The legs are huge, with armor coverings on the front and sides, and the shoulders have large armor plates on them as well. The designers of this kit obviously thought the design out, as it is nearly flawless, aside from the usual unarmored back common to exo-force mechs.

The Golden Guardian is also an awesome way to score a ton of useful pieces. The coolest ones are the golden details, including a giant pillar used as the main laser cannon, two technic armor pieces, and lots of small gold tiles. Even the stickers may be of use if they are not applied immediately, as they are extremely shiny and well printed. Other great pieces include tons of white smooth slopes, two large white fins, and a few dark red slopes and tiles.

Overall, Golden Guardian is an extremely impressive kit, and it contrasts the sloppy design prevalent throughout 2007. Whether you are an exo-force fan, a MOCer, or you just want to add another great kit to your collection, Golden Guardian will please you. 5/5.

Limited Golden Edition

Posted by Kruu in N/A on 24 March 2008

I have most of the Exe-force 2006 and 2007 sets, this was first and the best, this set was the reason I started buying other Exo-force to my six years old son, atleast thats what I sad to my wife LOL, got it randomly (saw Limited edition label and had to have it) of the shelf at a local store for about 1/3 of a price more than regular Exo-force robots...

Anyways apsolutely the best Exo-force for now

Awesome Mech!

Posted by Fighter95 in United States on 04 March 2008

This thing is awesome. When assembled, it is exactly 1 ft. high. The color scheme is way cool, and the detail is amazing. Golden Guardian has 6 weapons: A razor shield, a huge blaster, a smaller blaster, and 3 missles, one of which fires. The arm holding the shield can move at 3 joints, while the blaster can move at one. He also has a lot of awesome armor. This guy is great to play with, as it has the firing missle and many moving parts, including an opening cockpit. It is very sturdy, so it won't fall apart. The minifig is really cool too, with the gold details. Overall this guy is great to play with and looks awesome. I would definately recommend this set. In my opinion, 7714 Golden Guardian is the best EXO-FORCE set of 2007.
