This has got to be the stupidest minifig name ever, as well as the creepiest looking we have had on RMotD.

By in Germany,

Whoa... That was a surprise!

I think I have 2 or 3 of those. They were the first figures specifically made for Basic sets (if you exclude Maxi Figs), released in 1981.

They came in 2 versions: Female (Red body, long black hair) and Male (Blue body, short brown hair). Some catalogues called them "Fingerpuppet figures". There was even a Dacta set containing only these guys.

They lasted for almost 3 generations of Basic sets (1981, 1985 and 1990) until being slowly phased out in 1991 in favor of the next figure type (2 stacked 4744s with various prints).

The head even was reused on Fabuland figure bodies for a few sets in 1986!

She has no limbs. Were you expecting her to WALK her way into 25 sets?

My brother and I had a Basic bucket with a jumble of parts from a few sets when we were kids, and there were one or two of this style of figure in there. I was actually wondering recently if one of the finger puppet figures would ever be selected for RMotD.

Same here. Maybe the posters horrified by this are too young to have ever encountered these.

I was born like a full generation after these figures were around myself, so I'm not sure I really buy that theory, ha. It does seem to mostly be younger users making these comments though!

Agreed. We who grew up with these figures and loved playing with them will always have a fond place in our hearts for them.
Simpler times.

Just like Fabuland, where always stupid comments occur about how the animals shouldn't be able to get along because predator/prey.
Hello McFly, anybody home? It's just a fantasy fable play theme (hence even the name alluding to it).

By in Germany,

My parents only had pre-used Duplo given by relatives and it spanned multiple decades, meaning I had a few of those basic I think 80s? ones alongside the more minifig like 90s Duplo figures when I was really young.

To be fair, the Fabuland comments are basically just a community meme on here. It’s very intentionally exaggerated.

I know, but in that case I don't find it funny at all. It might have been in the beginning, but it's a joke that got old really fast imho.

Me and my fellow grasshoppers are shocked, but not too surprised at your sexist toys and your adoration of them. No wonder the world is in this state. ;)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@StyleCounselor : one can never have too many of these sexist toys.
Oh and since we played with Western toys featuring cowboys and Indians we apparently had racist toys too back then.
Fond memories.

Very early effort at inclusion. Before everybody did it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They remind me of the Fisher Price figures which had no arms and legs as too complicated for 2 year olds to manipulate. So strange they were included in Basic sets rather than Duplo, which now has far more complicated Mickey Mouse figures. I like the message on the box 'contains small parts', would now be updated to 'contains tiny parts'.

I always make sure to put these in my cart on Bricklink whenever a store I’m ordering from has them, because they’re adorable and super inexpensive

I DON'T want to hear that!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I remember these. They were included in the Basic sets designed for 3+ years. Sets for 5+ or older had the normal minifigs. I guess a small child could use them as fingerpuppets.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Now this takes me back!

I don't own one, but I encountered these many times at schools. Later I only recently learned that the design deliberately allows it to be used as a finger puppet. When I was a kid I thought I was a genius for using them in such an obviously non-system way!

For some reason I mostly forgot about these despite normally remembering lego stuff surprsingly well. To me it was such an unusual sight I never really expected to want to learn in what sets they came (as they're all basic sets) and what years they came in.
To see it here on Brickset is a bit surreal.

I grew up with the Homemaker style figures, which also seem to be treated as junk by people that grew up in the minifigure age. Of course, they have their deficiencies in that they are blocky, but were pretty much the ultimate LEGO figures if you want to customise the height, arm length, body shape, etc. If we were in an alternate universe where they had not done minifigures, but had continued with Homemaker style figures in an era when printing parts became common and had come up with a way to have more realistic legs, then I could see them being popular. I still think the arms are superior to minifigure arms.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It should be noted that this is a finger puppet for child sized fingers. A TFOL/AFOL putting this on their finger could result in a very embarrasing trip to the hospital, followed by the realisation that you now have a perfectly square finger.

Indeed.

It's been decades since I held one (I still have that Basic bucket I mentioned earlier, but just keep it around out of nostalgia; I never actually do anything with it), but I'm pretty sure that I could at least get my pinky in it. But then, my hands are small enough that shopping for gloves was always a pain.

Okay, I was all set to defend the honour of these staples of my childhood: innocent and noble creatures who, despite being much larger, played a Hobbit-like role in my Townland to the regular minifigs--but I don't see how I can top this display of devotion.
