Better pictures from the Canadian LEGO catalogue
Posted by Huw,
Yesterday we published the first images of 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens and the Marvel The Eternals sets that are to be found in the paper catalogue sent out to LEGO customers in Canada.
OneIsLit has kindly scanned the pages for us, so we now have much better pictures to pore over.
I've added them to the database and you'll also find them after the break.
71741 NINJAGO City Gardens
76145 Eternals' Aerial Assault
76154 Deviant Ambush!
76155 In Arishem's Shadow
76156 Rise of the Domo

Very nice very nice
These all actually look really cool. Looking forward to them!
Getting a better look at ninjago city gardens has raised more questions, it appears we won’t be able to connect it with the other segments...? It looks like the walkway forms a corner on all 3 sides, preventing an actual connection to the other sets.
Edit: never mind, it appears to only have a connection point on the right side!
Unpopular opinion comin through, I don’t really like Ninjago city gardens, like sure it’s cool and the minifigures are great but I already have Ninjago city and this just looks like a rehash of that set with a tree. Just a bit disappointing.
I’m not clear on the connections, but it appears that Ninjago City Gardens is ~48 studs left-to-right from the perspective pictured. I’d assumed it would be 32x32 again... awesome bonus! (Although it’ll be even harder to find space for it...)
Thanks for the scans, and for sharing them.
The ninjago city set interests me a lot more but I do like the gauntlet and hair pieces in the eternals sets.
Still insane to me they're just advertising mini-figure exclusivity with zero shame.

Seems like a considered decision to save your money. Good for you. Better than people who complain they are somehow forced to buy something they don't want!
@Huw I don't suppose these Lego LEGO.com catalogs are available on the site somewhere? With old school catalogs gone from inside the boxes, these are the next best thing.
I've got most of the ones from the last 20 years except for a few here and there that Lego neglected to send to me during my second dark age. ...except after multiple moves, they're in multiple places around the house. I need to organize a bookshelf by the Lego table at some point.
I also came across a Dacta catalog from 1995 that includes sets not listed in the database. I really need to scan that in at some point.

I'd be interested in seeing those if you can get to it, it's always cool to see an older set pop up in the new additions panel on the homepage
Two questions: Does that triangular spaceship has all the Eternals? Is that our first look of how a museum will look in a modular building?
Definitely looking forward to NINJAGO City Gardens.
Isn’t Gilgamesh some hero form Mesopotamia?
$400?! Are they going to kiss me first? This looks far more hollow, and therefore smaller than the original city set.

$400 Canadian dollars. Probably somewhere between $300 and $350 USD.

IIRC the Eternals are very long lived Marvel characters who have impacted civilisations around the world for thousands of years so it is probable that Gilgamesh was, and is, the ancient hero you are refering to.

Yes. Iirc, there's flood myths involving him that may appear familiar.
Sersi (or Circe) is another mythological character. Greek in this case
I’m a bit confused by people coming onto comments sections like this and asking ‘hey, can anyone tell me more about the Eternals?’ when they could type exactly the same thing into Google and not only get an instant response but also way more info than they’d get from anyone here! Rant over :-)
p.s. that isn’t aimed at anyone in particular, it’s just something that I’ve never understood on comments sections in general across the internet
anyone know a release date. Seeing it in a catalog makes me thing sometime in the next 2 months
Ninjago City Gardens' minifigures don't look very special to me so far, but I like the rooms included in the build.

No....to get all of them you would basically need to get all the sets, or buy aftermarket

Often I think people want to start an actual conversation when they post questions on message boards.

Just my opinion, but it has been over 5 years since the last castle sets retired. I would also love new Middle-Earth sets with Amazons new lotr series.
I have written a few reviews so feel free to read them. They aren't boring!"
I’d rather have castle AND Ninjago AND Marvel AND Lord of the Rings. It’s odd to me that people seem to think that classic and licensed themes/Ninjago are mutually exclusive and can’t coexist.

The blue box in the upper-right hand corner of the Ninjago City Gardens image says "VIP early access starts January 14. Set widely available February 1st." I flipped through the rest of the catalogue and didn't find any other information about product release dates. The catalogue cover is dated "January 2021".

I totally agree. LEGO has so much potential and I think that historical themes would be a perfect way to use it.
Those Eternals sets look great. However, it's a bit annoying that you have to buy every set to get all of the minifigures.

I suspect it’s a roundabout way of saying they haven’t heard of the Eternals (or whatever franchise/character) so why should they care about them and support LEGO’s licence. If AFOLs are going to pay a premium for Marvel (or whatever), they want to do so for IP they recognise and value, not obscure material.

10cm taller than Ninjago City!
I need to see a few more shots of Ninjago City Gardens to decide if it’s a must-buy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jumU_nlCl-o is the only one so far for USA.
I like them. Very nice figures, even though I’ll probably watch the film first. Rise of the Domo is my favourite.
How did they get over 5000 pieces in that Ninjago City Gardens? It looks hollow in the photo. Granted, that might be an artefact of photography. But it seems less full than the original Ninjago City, yet contains more pieces. I guess we'll see soon enough.
Of course, I'm going to buy it anyhow. :)
I'm really curious to see what's on the other side of the Gardens. The angle they've chosen really hides the depth of this. Love the teal tower control tower and the general use of colors.
Makes me wish they would bring back Docks and City thought, I couldn't get them at the time and their value has shot up.
ninjago city gardens got a rock raiders reference

Eternals isn't exactly obscure in the Marvel canon. It might not be the best-known or most recent title but considering some of the other stuff that's been adapted? Also I believe the biggest Eternals stories were written by Neil Gaiman who isn't exactly a nobody.

I don’t know the release date for the eternals sets, but the gardens will be a VIP release on January 14th, exclusive release to everyone from Lego February 1st, then it can be brought at retailers on may 1st, that’s what the teaser from a few weeks back said
Is a UK printed 'square'(not LEGO.com) catalogue available anywhere?
For the first time in about 50 yrs I was unable to get one in 2020.
@Huw, could you please add a better main picture for set 71738?
The Gardens set does look impressive, but I do wish it was more about the gardens aspect. I should have known it was never going to have too much similarity to the CNY garden set... that would make no commercial sense for TLG. It seems more like a Ninjago City II, which in itself is no bad thing. Still an awesome addition to the other two sets with some great civilian shops/food outlets. Just an odd choice of set name. Look forward to seeing some other angles and how it looks paired with City and Docks. Got good discounts on those two, wonder if the new AFOL popularity in Lego will make it harder to ever find this set discounted?
Dear LEgo. If you make set for fans. At least INCLUDE FIGURES THAT MATCH THE ORIGINAL CONTENT.
I do love the build of Ninjago Gardens though, and I dont agree it looks like repetition.
Is it just me, or am I the only one missing the "gardens" aspect of ninjago gardens? Not saying this looks bad but it just looks more like a ninjago city section then any sort of garden.... I was thinking like the new Chinese new year set but more vertical...
NCG obviously looks amazing and honestly I'm kinda glad I never got either of the other NC sets so I'm far less inclined to buy this
Stoked for Gardens, but must admit I thought it would be a bit more...... well....... like a garden, when I first heard about it I thought something along the lines of Spring Lantern Festival was coming down the Lego Ninjago pipe, still looks amazing though. Also interested to see what it looks like from the rear.

But when you say Neil Gaiman, the first thing that springs to mind isn’t The Eternals but rather The Sandman. Gosh I wish LEGO would do some Sandman sets (bit dark though).
Please stop showing pictures of Ninjago city gardens, I’m going to have to buy it on day one without waiting to see what else is released during the year. I have a strict budget for Lego this year.

I think that ‘Gardens’ is being used in the sense of ‘Street’ (see sense 4 in Collins: https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/garden ) and the buildings on it. Not saying that was a good decision on LEGO’s part or that it isn’t confusing, but it is correct usage.
^^^“I think that ‘Gardens’ is being used in the sense of ‘Street’”...
Or a place, for example ‘Chinatown’ is not a town as such, just a place name or area within a city. The fact that it has “Ninjago City” before “Gardens” would indicate the same maybe?
I guess it doesn’t matter really. Confusing just the same!
Holy interlocking bricks! My heart says "I've been waiting so long!" But my wallet says, "I thought you wanted x,y,z other budget busting set..." My wife will say "don't even ask bub." So excited, yet so torn, thus ends 2020 lol.

"So is the NINJAGO City Gardens designed to connect to the City and Docks sets?"
It does, yes.
Anyway, it definitely has some gardening elements to it, with 2 brick-built trees, but it's almost like the shops and "Ninja Control Tower" dominate the facade. I don't blame Lego for this decision, though- the audience probably wants more structural density to the city.
Kind of happy it's not really a garden. I missed out on the first ones(NC and NC docks) and am glad to finally get a proper Ninjago city. I do like the tree a lot though. plus this one isn't based off a meh movie.
Marvel turned a relatively obscure property into big money with Guardians of the Galaxy... Can they do it again with the Eternals?
I think they will. Or Angelina Jolie will.
I like the Eternals sets. Jack Kirby creations seem to translate to Lego very nicely.

Me as well. It seemed to take forever for photos of the back (front?) side of the Ninjago City Docks to get released a few years back!
@TheLazyChicken On further inspection, it looks like the Gardens are a 32x32 baseplate for the main structure, and a separate 16x32 baseplate for the temple island at the left. I expect the temple island can be detached as a separate modular piece, much like the pagoda in the Lantern Festival set. It looks to me like the 32x32 section is a regular modular corner (with two connections), as expected, and the temple island is a half-width modular section (again with two connections). I expect the upper-city walkway on the left of the main section, above the temple island, will be detachable and could be moved to the right side of the main tower, too, in order to move the temple island to the other side of the gardens so that another Ninjago City section could go immediately to the left of the Gardens tower.

"10cm taller than Ninjago City!"
I just measured the height of the space which houses our existing Ninjago city layout. It's only 68 cm tall, so gardens will not fit. :-/
All the Eternals sets seemed like a lot but then i realized it was in Canadian dollars.
$240 cad = $180 usd msrp = $144 if youre patient enough for the obligatory 20% off, for 15 minifigs and 1863 pieces.
Still a lot for a random new Marvel movie, this is more than anything besides the Avengers movies and Civil War got.

The set as a whole is both taller and wider than the original Ninjago City set, which I suppose compensates for the large open area around the memorial tree. The various decorative elements used for the trees and other plants also probably add a lot to the piece count.

Given how heavily developed and densely populated Ninjago City is, I think it makes sense that a lot of the "gardens" would take the form of stuff like roof gardens, hanging gardens, "green walls", etc, since those are popular urban landscaping techniques for areas with very little vacant land even in real life.
Also, unlike the Creator Expert Modular Buildings, neither of the previous Ninjago City sets have been dominated by any one large property that is clearly separated from neighboring homes and businesses. So it stands to reason that "gardens" would likewise take a form that organically spreads out and intertwines with the surrounding urban environment, rather than standing apart from the neighboring buildings and thoroughfares like a park or arboretum.
That said, looking at these scans a little closer, I strongly suspect there will be more flowers and greenery on the opposite side from the view shown in the catalog. In particular, there are some flower bushes visible right behind Clutch Powers which I expect would continue around the back of that left-hand building.
It's fitting that a lot of the gardens themselves would be most visible from the inside corner, since even more so than Ninjago City, there appears to be much more open space there than on the outside corner. Particularly on the "Old World" level, the white and brown building to the left of the memorial tree is so close to the edge of the base that the pedestrian walkway has to wrap around the back of the building, rather than the front. The more open waterway around the back side would also provide a more spacious area for plants like reeds and lilies.
Plus, some of the greenery in the canal towards the front is made up of the same ten-piece Bright Green weapon assortment that was used for the Jadeblades in the Tournament of Elements set. So it stands to reason that the remainder of the blade pieces from that assortment are being used on parts of the model which aren't as visible from this angle. Overall, I see it as all the more reason to look forward to pictures of the set from more angles!
Along the same lines, I've seen plenty of bewildering comments from people who felt that NInjago City Docks was "not really a dock"… though I have idea what those commenters expected "docks" to look like which that set lacks, unless they expected a much larger crane like some more "modern day" docks and harbors have included. So I guess this is just another indication of just how different Ninjago City versions of a particular sort of setting might look from what people would expect from a typical "real life" version of that type of setting.

I think the 16x32 base plate which contains the temple could maybe be moved either side of the main 32x32

Yes. He is the protagonist of Ancient Babylons version of the Flood story."
That's a bit of a simplification. The flood story is only one small part of the Epic of Gilgamesh, which includes a great deal of unrelated adventures (much like how Greek and Norse mythologies include many stories about their various gods).
Is there a confirmed release date for Ninjago City Gardens in the UK?
Everywhere I have looked mentions Jan 14th, but there is no reference to this whatsoever on the UK Lego site.
NEW Lego magazine just dropped through the letter box, and all confirmed in the UK.
Jan 14th VIP release
£274.99
Happy days
Hoping the panda BrickHeadz might be a GWP as well??!!
@aztecwarrior
@Toc13
@Lyichir
To be specific, the flood myth is in the Epic of Gilgamesh, along with many other stories as @Lyichir pointed out, but takes place before the titular hero is born. The protagonist of the flood myth is named Utnapishtim. I know I spelled his name correctly because autocorrect recognizes it.
